LIMESTONE 26, LEES MCRAE 3 - Feb. 23 - Gaffney, SC
Limestone starts the 2000 campaign with a decisive 26-3 victory over Lees McRae College. The Saints scored 11 times in the first quarter and took a 17-0 lead at the half. Nick Carlson scored five goals and added an assist while Matt Collins netted four with two assists. Thirteen different Limestone players scored in the contest.
LIMESTONE 15, ST. ANDREWS 9 - Feb. 26 - Laurinburg, NC
Limestone uses a 4-1 first quarter lead to defeat the host Knights, 15-9. In a battle throughout the game, the Saints never relinquished the lead, answering each St. Andrews threat. Nick Carlson scored four goals and Matt Collins scored three goals and an assist for Limestone. The win marked the third consecutive victory over the Knights in the overall series.
LIMESTONE 14, DOWLING 9 - Mar. 4 - Gaffney, SC
After a tight first quarter, the Saints exploded for five goals in the second to take a 7-3 lead at the half. Limestone stretched its lead to 9-3 in the third quarter before the Lions could get back on track. With the scored 10-7 with six minutes to go, Limestone scored four goals within a three minute span to seal the win. Matt Collins led all scorers with four goals and an assist.
LIMESTONE 30, REGIS 4 - Mar. 8 - Gaffney, SC
Limestone set the team record for goals in a game as they reached the thirty-goal mark for the first time in history. The Saints led 8-0 at the end of one quarter and 20-0 at the half. Freshman attackman Devan Spilker scored five goals and added five assists for Limestone. Sixteen different Saints tallied goals in the lopsided win.
LIMESTONE 33, MARS HILL 4 - Mar. 15 - Gaffney, SC
The Saints top the thirty-goal plateau for a second straight game, breaking their team record for goals in a game set one game ago. Iggy Levelev and Nick Carlson each scored three times while assisting on four others for Limestone. For the second straight game, and for the third time in the short season, just about everybody got into the act as eighteen different players scored for Limestone.
RADFORD 10, LIMESTONE 9 - Mar. 18 - Radford, VA
Reality sets in on the Saints as they lose their first game of the season. Coming off two relatively easy contests, Limestone failed to play their best lacrosse versus a strong Highlanders squad. After Limestone took a 1-0 lead at the end of one period, Radford outscored the Saints 9-4 in the middle two quarters. Trailing 9-5 going into the final quarter, the Saints came storming back with four goals, three in a 50 second span, to tie the game at 9. Radford would score the eventual game winner with four minutes to play and held off the Saints from there for the victory. Nick Carlson led all scorers with three goals and two assists for Limestone.
WASHINGTON 13, LIMESTONE 12 - Mar. 25 - Chestertown, MD
The Shoremen break a 12-12 tie with 35 seconds left to beat the Saints in a tough interdivisional battle. Limestone played probably their best game of the season to date and almost upended the Division III power on the road. The Saints got off to a quick start, scoring the game's opening three goals, however, Washington held its own and the game was tied at five at the half. With the lead changing hands several times throughout the contest, the Shoremen pulled out the victory with the late goal. Devan Spilker scored four goals and added two assists for the Saints.
LIMESTONE 21, WINGATE 4 - Apr. 1 - Gaffney, SC
Limestone continued its march through the south with an impressive 21-4 win over the Bulldogs. The Saints jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Limestone played consistently well on both sides of the field as the easily beat Wingate. Matt Collins scored five times and Nick Carlson scored four goals and added an assist for Limestone.
LIMESTONE 19, CATAWBA 4 - Apr. 5 - Salisbury, NC
Limestone always struggle when they visited Catawba, but not this time. Limestone scored six goals in each of the first three quarters to handle the Indians on their home field. The Saints led 12-1 at the half and 18-2 after three quarters en route to their fifth conference victory of the season. Matt Collins scored six goals and assisted on three others while Devan Spilker assisted on six goals and added two goals of his own.
LIMESTONE 18, WEST CHESTER 6 - Apr. 8 - Gaffney, SC
Revenge was on the minds of the Saints as the scored seven goals in the opening quarter to overtake the visiting Rams. Preventing a repeat of the poor performance against West Chester in 1999, Limestone kept up its relentless attack and held an 11-4 lead at the half on their way to the victory. Devan Spilker scored two goals and added five assists to lead the Saints to the victory.
LIMESTONE 22, PFEIFFER 10 - Apr. 15 - Misenheimer, NC
Nick Carlson set a school record for goals in a game with 10 and points in a game with 12 to clinch a third straight undefeated conference season for the Saints. Carlson scored Limestone's first six goals of the contest to offset a resilient Falcon squad early in the contest. With only an 8-5 lead at the half, Limestone crushed Pfeiffer with eight third quarter goals to take a 16-6 lead into the final quarter. The win secured the top spot in the upcoming conference tournament.
LIMESTONE 16, WINGATE 5 - Apr. 20 - Wingate, NC
The Saints beat Wingate for the second time and advance to the conference championship game. Limestone took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and was leading 4-0 in the second quarter before the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard. However, it was a third quarter outburst for the second game in a row that put the game away for the Saints. With a 5-2 lead at intermission, Limestone scored seven times to break the game wide open and took a 12-3 lead into the final quarter. Nick Carlson scored five goals for the Saints.
LIMESTONE 13, PFEIFFER 8 - Apr. 22 - Wingate, NC
Limestone wins its second consecutive Deep South Conference Championship with a 13-8 victory. Unlike the first meeting between these two teams, Limestone jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and expanded the gap to 8-2 at the half. The Falcons played tough in the second half but could never get closer than five as the Saints looked to get the South region bid to the national championship game. Devan Spilker scored three goals and added an assist as his brother Brendan scored two goals and added two assists to lead Limestone to the victory.
LIMESTONE 30, WHEELING JESUIT 4 - Apr. 28 - Wheeling, WV
Limestone scored 11 times in the first quarter to easily beat first-year program Wheeling Jesuit. Limestone led 17-1 at the half and 25-2 at the end of three quarters in the one-sided game. Chris Campbell led all scorers with a goal and six assists as seventeen different players scored for Limestone.
LIMESTONE 26, LEES MCRAE 2 - May 4 - Banner Elk, NC
In their first game ever in the month of May, the Saints overcame an overconfident and sluggish start to defeat the Bobcats. With the score tied 1-1 towards the later stages of the opening quarter, the Saints scored 22 unanswered goals en route to the win. Matt Collins scored six times for the Saints.
NCAA DIVISION II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME LIMESTONE 10, C.W. POST 9 - May 28 - College Park, MD
In the school's first ever NCAA National Championship appearance in any sport, Limestone College defeated traditional Division II power C.W. Post 10-9 in a historical battle. Limestone used a dominating first period to carry themselves to the title. After Rick Matthews scored just 32 seconds into the game, the Saints added two more early goals to take a commanding 3-0 lead late into the opening period. Post would battle back however, tying the game on two different occasions in the first half. But by halftime, it was Limestone that held a 5-4 lead.
In the second half, the classic contest continued as the team's traded goals throughout the third period. Each time Limestone would try to increase its lead, Post would pull back within a goal. So when Matt Collins scored with 3:38 to go in the game to put the Saints ahead 10-7, not many of the record-setting crowd of 2,019 had left their seats anticipating one more push by the Pioneers. That push came just over a minute later as Post scored two quick goals to make the score, 10-9. The game came to one last defensive stand as the Saints held off one last push by Post in the last 15 seconds to secure the national title. Sophomore attackman, Nick Carlson, was named the game's Most Valuable Player as he scored three goals and added one assist for the Division II national champions. |
