May 5, 2001 LIMESTONE LACROSSE Limestone College at Washington & Lee LEXINGTON, Va. -- Third-ranked Washington and Lee closed out its 2001 season with a 12-7 win over Limetone College, the No. 1 ranked team in Division II. The Generals (14-1) surged out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 13:34 of the game on unassisted goals by senior midfielders Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall), and junior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien). However, the Saints (12-2) would answer before the end of the first period as freshman attackman John Navarro (Crofton, Md./Arundel) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Devan Spilker (Glen Burnie, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) with 31 seconds remaining. Hackney struck back on another unassisted tally with 14:22 remaining in the half to give the Generals a 4-1 lead. Limestone would again answer, knotting the game at 4-4 at the half as senior midfielder Chris Campbell (Sudlersville, Md./Queen Anne's), junior attackman Nick Carlson (Lantzville, B.C./Dover Bay Secondary) and senior midfielder Brendan Spilker (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) each found the net unassisted. Spilker's goal came with 17 seconds remaining. The Generals assumed another lead, this time at 5-4 as senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored on an assist by Barnett. The goal tied the W&L record for career goals held by Sam Englehart since the 1973 season. The Saints then reeled off a pair of goals, both by Carlson off assists from Navarro to take a 6-5 lead with 8:50 remaining in the third period before W&L assumed control of the game by scoring six unanswered goals to take an 11-6 lead with 3:47 remaining in the fourth period. Dugan scored during the stretch to become W&L's all-time goal leader. Both teams would add a late goal, including another by Dugan, his 182nd career goal, to provide the 12-7 final. The Generals were led by Dugan (3 g, 1 a), Hackney (3 g, 1 a) and Barnett (2 g, 2 a), who totaled four points each. Freshman midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) added a pair of goals, while senior Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) stopped five shots in goal. Limestone was led by Carlson with three goals and Navarro with one goal and two assists. Sophomore Matt Malloy (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) stopped 17 shots in goal. #1 LIMESTONE WINS DSC TOURNEY WITH 18-10 VICTORY OVER ST. ANDREWS Wingate, N.C.----Limestone College junior attack Nick Carlson had five goals and two assists, leading the Saints to an 18-10 win over St. Andrews College in the Deep South Conference men.s lacrosse tournament championship game held this afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the campus of Wingate University. The number one team in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/NCAA Division II top 10, Limestone (11-1 overall) travels to NCAA Division I Radford for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday. St. Andrews (7-6 overall) visits Mercyhurst (Pa.) Saturday at 1 p.m. Limestone led 4-3 after the first quarter. Carlson scored three unanswered goals to start the second quarter, giving the Saints a 7-3 advantage. St. Andrews would get no closer the rest of the way. The Saints dominated the final statistics. Limestone outshot St. Andrews 58-37. The Saints had 55 ground balls, compared to 40 for the Knights. Carlson had much support in the championship contest. Senior midfielder Chris Campbell had three goals, while senior midfielder Brendan Spilker, junior midfielder Chris Mangum and sophomore attack Devan Spilker had two goals each for the victors. For St. Andrews, junior attack Mike McCarthy had four goals and one assist. Sophomore midfielder Brendon Burke contributed two goals and one assist. The Knights scored three goals in the final 6:39 of the contest to make things interesting. St. Andrews senior goalkeeper Jesse Weber had 20 saves in his final Deep South Conference game. #1 LIMESTONE EDGES WINGATE 12-10 IN DSC LAX SEMIFINALS Wingate, N.C.----Limestone College scored three unanswered goals to open the fourth quarter, breaking an 8-8 tie en route to a 12-10 win over Wingate University this afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. The number one team in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/NCAA Division II top 10, Limestone (10-1 overall) advances to Sunday.s championship game against St. Andrews College, a 12-11 winner over Pfeiffer University in the other semifinal. Game time is 2 p.m. at Belk Stadium and Martin Field. Wingate (10-4 overall) gave the defending NCAA Division II champions everything they could handle in the early going. The Bulldogs led 5-4 at halftime, thanks to three extra-man goals. Wingate senior attack Steve Gorham (Elbridge, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Ian Hill (Rochester, N.Y.) scored two goals each in the first half. After Limestone junior midfielder Chris Mangum scored at the 10:05 mark of the third quarter to tie the game at five, Wingate answered with goals by Hill and sophomore midfielder Drew Penny (Falmouth, Va.) to take a 7-5 advantage. The Saints responded with three unanswered goals before Wingate freshman attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.) scored on an assist by senior attack Mason Curry (Jordan, N.Y.) at the 1:27 plateau of the third frame to tie the game at eight entering the final quarter. Limestone junior attack Nick Carlson was the key ingredient in the Saints. second half rally. Carlson had one goal in the third quarter. In the fourth frame, he assisted senior midfielder Jon Riley on the eventual game winner at the 14:45 mark. He added a fourth-quarter goal of his own with 10:04 remaining to give the Saints a 10-8 lead. Carlson had three goals and one assist to lead the Saints in scoring. Mangum added two goals and two assists, while Riley and senior midfielder Ryan Ross contributed two goals each. For Wingate, Hill had four goals and one assist. Gorham had two goals, while Curry and Maxwell had one goal and two assists each. The Bulldogs scored four extra-man goals on the afternoon. In the pipes, Limestone sophomore goalkeeper Matt Malloy had 13 saves, while Wingate sophomore netminder John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) recorded a career-high 26 saves. Brent Ries played well for the Falcons with a 3 goal and 4 assist performance. On the day Limestone's extra man unit went 6 for 6. With this win, Limestone extends their Deep South win streak to 31 straight. This win secures the number 1 seed in the league, and gives Limestone a first round bye. All other Deep South teams will square off on Wednesday in first round action Limestone record stands at 9-1, while Pfeiffer falls to 5-6. GAME SUMMARY Limestone College had little trouble extending their win streak to 3 games. Limestone out shot St. Andrews 51 to 40, much credit should go to the Saints man down defense for killing 9 out of 12 Limestone penalties. Limestone College is 8-1 on the year and 5-0 in Deep South Conference play and St. Andrews now stands at 3-5. The Saints next game is on Senior Day, April 14th when the Saints host Deep South Conference rival Pfeiffer University at 2:00 p.m. at Saints Field. The Maroons netminder made 25 saves and played well throughout the game, especially early. The Saints are back home to face Deep South Conference foe St. Andrews College on April 7. Twelve different players scored for the Saints. Leading the way was junior attackman, Nick Carlson, with five goals and three assists. Sophomore attackman, Devan Spilker, scored three goals and added four assists for Limestone while freshman attackman Jason Randolph scored four goals. Despite the amount of goals allowed, Mars Hill goaltender, Brian Maleski had a strong game. The Lions netminder made 13 saves and played well throughout the game, especially early. The Saints will host perennial division three power Roanoke College. The game is Saturday, March 31st at 2:00pm at Saints Field. March 24, 2001 LIMESTONE LACROSSE Limestone College at Washington College Washington College defeats Limestone 13 - 12 3/24/2001 Chestertown, MD Washington College (3-3) defeated the defending Division II National Champion, Limestone (5-1), 13-12. Junior Craig Rentch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) converted a pass from freshmen Steve Berger (Jessup, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) with 0:48 left for the game winner. In 2000, the Shoremen also edged out the Saints, 13-12, scoring the game winner with 0:35 seconds left. Washington is now 2-0 all-time against Limestone. The game was close throughout the first half, with the Saints holding a slim 6-5 halftime lead. Limestone began to take control of the game in the third scoring four goals to Washington's three. Nick Carlson (Lantzville, BC/Dover Bay Sec.) scored two of his four goals in the period to lead the Saints. At the start of the fourth the score was 10-8 in favor of Limestone. Washington opened the period's scoring with an unassisted goal from Rentch at the 13:44 mark, but Limestone scored a goal of their own to make the score 11-9. Washington would come right back at the 9:05 mark with a goal by Berger. Dan Meehan (Brightwaters, NY/Bay Shore) had the assist on the play. The two teams would battle back and forth for the next six minutes until the 3:49 mark when Limestone again took a two goal lead on a Brad Bauer (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) goal. Washington would then score three straight goals to come away with the victory. Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) would score his second goal of the game off a Meehan pass to bring the Shoremen within one with two minutes remaining in the game. Berger got his third tally in the contest to tie the game with 1:22 remaining. Rentch then tossed in the winning goal with 0:48 left. Washington College is ranked 14th in the latest USILA/STX Division III national poll.
