Games Notes...

Coach TW Johnson
To start I think we need to give some credit to Coach Kaley and his players, staff. I think they played a very good game today. They executed well. Their goalie played excellent. They played with a purpose today and played at a pretty high speed. Usually the team that does that wins. So congratulations to them on a great year and a great game.

I told them they had nothing to be ashamed of. The last four years, these seniors have won, as freshman we were 14-2, as sophomores they were 13-3, as juniors they went 13-2 and this year we had 13 wins. That’s a lot of wins. It’s a very hard working group and they’ve definitely taken this program to the next level. A lot of people never get to this stage and they’ve been here four times.

They were quicker to the ball than us today. A lot of groundball situations that were 50/50 balls. Hunter played a great game created a lot of transition for them.

Matt Malloy – (on NYIT)
NYIT is a pretty good team. They score a lot of their goals on the inside. I was expecting a lot of shots on the inside. I just tried to do what ever I could to put my body in front of it. I stopped some, didn’t stop others.

Devan Spilker – (on NYIT goalie Matt Hunter)
I thought he was a really good goalie. He’s got the quickest hands, he’s probably the best goalie we’ve faced all year. We tried to shot on his off stick side. He’s stick side anywhere, even his feet. My first four shots of the first quarter, I was putting them off hip and he was just making saves. He was hot today. When a goalie gets hot in the goal, when he’s seeing the ball, it’s hard to put the ball in the goal.

(on playing at M&T Bank Stadium in front of a hometown crowd)
It was a great experience. When we walked in here yesterday and everyone was in here, it was great. The way to finish your career, we didn’t get a win but four national championships in a row, I really can’t complain. We went out there and fought and they were just a better team today. We did as much as we could.

Limestone's next game:
2003 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Division II National Championship vs.#2 New York Tech (13-0) Sun., May 25 at Ravens Stadium in Baltimore, Md (3:00)

Game Story
No. 4 Limestone defeats #7 Mercyhurst 12-4 in NCAA Div. II Southwest Region Championship

Saints to face #2 NY Tech in title game for the second straight season

Gaffney, S.C....The reigning NCAA Division II national champion and fourth ranked Limestone College men’s lacrosse team overcame a 2-0 second quarter deficit in defeating seventh-ranked Mercyhurst 12-4 in the 2003 Southwest Region Championship on Saturday at “THE ROCK.” The win not only avenged an earlier 13-12 overtime loss to the Lakers this season but also sends the Saints to the national title game for a fourth straight season.

As for Saturday’s Southwest Region Championship, Limestone outscored the Lakers 5-0 in the second quarter to overcome a 2-0 deficit. The Saints got on the board 1:58 into the second period when attacker Devan Spilker (Sr., Glen Burnie, Md) scored with an assist from midfielder John Navarro (Jr., Crofton, Md) who ended the day with a pair of assists. Limestone would tie the game less than two minutes later, that at the 11:09 mark, on attackman Jason Randolph’s (Jr., Arnold, Md) unassisted goal and then less than two minutes after that the Saints would grab their first lead when midfielder/attacker Robert Woody (So., Edgewater, Md) scored an unassisted goal with 9:58 left in the second period giving the Saints a 3-2 edge and would not be equaled the rest of the way. In all, Limestone outscored Mercyhurst 9-0 over the second and third periods combined while holding a 29-9 edge in shots over those two quarters.

Spilker tallied a game high five points thanks to three goals and two assists while attack/midfielder David Wooster (Fr., Annapolis, MD) scored three goals as well and added one assist. Randolph and Woody, with two each, were Limestone’s other multi goal scorer’s.

Mercyhurst, 11-3, had the momentum early on Saturday out shooting the Saints 8-4 in the first quarter to grab a 2-0 lead. Andrew Sands (So., Wallingford, Pa), an attacker, scored the games first goal on an assist from midfielder Jim Detilwer (Sr. Webster, NY) with 4:57 left in the first period with the Lakers adding another with 1:21 left in the opening stanza as Andrew Schuster (Fr., Reistertown, Md) tallied a goal with Detwiler getting his second and team high second assist. But Limestone took control of the game starting beginning with the second quarter outscoring the Lakers the 12-2 and out shooting them 45 to 17 over the final three quarters.

In goal Limestone’s Matt Malloy (Sr. Crofton, Md) came up with nine saves while yielding three goals in 56-plus minutes while Mercyhurst’s goalie of record Mike Rispoli (Jr., Farmingville, NY) stopped 15 shots and allowed 12 goals in his 54-plus minutes between the pipes.

Limestone, 13-2, will now go against second-ranked NY Tech in the 2003 NCAA Men’s Division II National Championship, on Sunday May 25th at Ravens Stadium in Baltimore, Md., at 3:00 PM. The Bears (13-0) upended top-ranked and previously undefeated Le Moyne 12-11 in the Northeast Region Championship in Syracuse, NY on Saturday. It will mark the second straight season that Limestone and NY Tech meet in the title game with the Saints winning an 11-9 thriller last season at Rutgers. This is the fourth consecutive season that the Limestone has advanced to the NCAA Division II Championship winning the title twice. The Saints claimed the College’s first ever NCAA national championship in 2000 with a 10-9 victory against LIU-C.W. Post (Ludwig Field, University of Maryland), but came up short in their bid to repeat in 2001 with a 14-10 loss to Adelphi (Yurcak Field, Rutgers University) before last seasons victory against the Bears.

Limestone has won 56 of its last 59 games played versus fellow NCAA Division II members. Limestone, since Division II lacrosse was reestablished in 1993, has compiled a mark of 91-26 (.775) against D2 foes while posting an overall record of 108-41(.722).

Sunday’s national championship will be broadcast LIVE on Gaffney radio stations WAGI-FM 105.3 and WEAC-AM 1500 as well as worldwide via both the Internet and telephone. More information on the worldwide audio will be available at www.limestone.edu

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO LIMESTONE, 7-6, IN OVERTIME

Lexington, VA:...Sophomore midfielder Nolan Heavenor (Victoria, B.C./Spectrum) found the net off an assist by freshman attackman David Wooster (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) with 1:33 remaining in overtime to lift Limestone to a 7-6 overtime victory over Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Limestone (12-2) broke a 2-2 halftime tie with three straight goals to start the third period following a 20 minute delay for lightning. Junior attackman Jason Randolph (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) scored one goal, while Wooster scored two during the three-goal run. The Generals (9-5) responded as sophomore attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored an extra-man goal off an assist by junior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) with 6:10 remaining in the third period. W&L then tied the game at 5-5 as senior midfielder Rob Brown (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) scored unassisted and junior attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) found rope off an assist by Molinelli.

The game featured another lightning delay before the start of overtime. In the extra frame, W&L won the faceoff and controlled the early part of the period without a shot. Following a W&L turnover, Heavenor's goal out of the offensive set was the game-winner.

W&L was led by Molinelli's one goal and three assists. Martin tallied one goal and one assist, while junior goalie Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) posted nine saves.

Wooster led the Saints with four goals and one assist. Senior goalie Matt Malloy (Crofton, Md./Arundel) stopped seven shots in net.
