2003 Outlook

The Limestone College Men's Lacrosse Program is coming off its three best seasons in school history. With four straight Deep South Conference Championships and two of the last three National Championships, the expectations are once again high for the Saints. Limestone finished ranked third in the last regular season poll during the 2002 season. While the Saints did graduate key players from last season's National Championship team, a strong nucleus returns to lead Limestone into the 2003 season.

Although the Saints lost the 2002 Division II Player of the Year and Attackman of the year in Nick Carlson, two out of three starters return on the Limestone attack unit. Senior Devan Spilker, USILA 2nd Team All-American and NCAA National Championship Game MVP, will be the Saints' top returning scorer. In fact, Spilker is on track to become the program's all-time leading scorer this season. Junior Jason Randolph ended the 2002 season by playing one of his best games in the National Championship. One of the most underrated attackman during 2002, Randolph should emerge as one of the top attackman in Division II during the 2003 season.

Last season, Limestone fielded one of the youngest midfield units in program history, but this season the Saints' midfield unit will be a strength. Leading the charge at the midfield will be junior John Navarro who moved to midfield from attack in 2002. This fall Navarro improved his strength and shooting ability, which should allow him to become more of a threat. Navarro has excellent field vision and the ability to find the open man at all times. Joining Navarro will be sophomore Nolan Heavenor who started at the end of the 2002 season. Heavenor is a powerful midfielder who has also worked hard to improve this fall. Sophomore Bobby Woody worked with the first and second midfield units late last spring after moving to midfield from attack. Not only does Woody possess great shooting ability, but he can find the open man also. Kyle Zentz, Chris Barrett, Chris Wolff, Brad Patridge, Pat Cardiff, Zach Rosier, Dustin McConnaughhay, Louis Anuszewski, and Jesse Buppert will give the Saints' one of the deepest midfield units in the country. Senior Damon Woolford returns as Limestone's top defensive midfielder. Woolford's great footwork and speed allow him to be a threat in transition also. Junior Nick DeLonga will handle the face-off duties for Limestone again this season. DeLonga won .670% of his face-offs and picked up 137 ground balls during his All-American campaign. DeLonga will serve as a tri-captain also. Freshman Harley Beekman and Heavenor give the Saints depth at the face-off position.

Two out of three starting defenseman return from last year's defense. Juniors Nick Kobakof and Clint Pitts return to give Limestone experience and leadership at close defense. Kobakof was selected Second Team All Deep South Conference in 2002. Kobakof, one of the Saints tri-captains, has a great understanding of the game and will anchor Limestone's close defense. Pitts gained valuable experience during his first year as a starter. Pitts is one of the most gifted athletes on the team and has the ability to shut down opposing attackman. Adding depth at defense will be senior Andrew Wilkinson and freshmen Brian Roche and Travis Bitter. Wilkinson, Roche, and Bitter all have excellent stick skills, which will assist in the clearing game. Bitter has the ability to play longstick also.

In goal, senior Matt Malloy is coming off back to back All-American seasons. In 2002, Malloy was tabbed as a USILA 2nd Team All-American. Malloy lead all Division II goalies in goals against average. In three seasons at Limestone, Malloy has started in three National Championship games. His leadership and experience make him the director of the Saints' defense. Malloy will be a captain for the second straight season.

Limestone will look to improve its string of ten consecutive seasons ranked in the Division II top ten. Also, the Saints will hope to defend their conference title and earn the right to play in the National Championship for the fourth consecutive year.
