LIMESTONE MEN’S LACROSSE COMPETES IN NCAA SEMIFINAL THIS SATURDAY
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Limestone College men's lacrosse team looks to make its seventh straight NCAA Division II tournament final appearance on May 28, but first the Saints must defeat the nation's top Division II team, LeMoyne, this Saturday in the tournament semifinals in Syracuse, N.Y. The Dolphins and Saints will battle it out at 1 p.m.

One team from each of the three regions and one at-large team were selected to compete in the 2006 NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse tournament. The other two teams in this year's field are Dowling and Mercyhurst. Dowling (11-1) hosts Mercyhurst (12-2) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Limestone and LeMoyne are the only two teams selected for NCAA play this year that have won the national title.

This year's meeting marks the third consecutive year Limestone and LeMoyne have met in the tournament. The Dolphins upset the Saints, 11-10, in 2004, to win the national title, while Limestone defeated LeMoyne, 9-8, in the NCAA semifinals last season to advance to the championship game.

The Saints are familiar with postseason play, having won the national championship in 2000 and 2002. Despite facing many challenges this spring, Limestone maintained its reputation as a men's lacrosse powerhouse as the team clinched its eighth straight Deep South Conference title and received an NCAA berth. The Saints' overall record of 11-6 marks the 10th straight year that the squad has posted a winning record. In fact, Limestone has not had a winning percentage below .500 since 1992 when the team was 5-7 in the program's third year of existence. Despite losses earlier this year, the Saints have won seven of their last eight games heading into the postseason.

The Saints' lineup features a talented attack that boasts three players who have tallied at least 30 points this season: Drew Comeau (38 points, 27 goals, 11 assists), Brad Patridge (38 points, 25 goals, 13 assists) and Pat Beall (31 points, 16 goals, 15 assists). The defense is anchored by goalkeeper Marty Ward (146 saves) and defenders Matt Fields (24 ground balls, 6 caused turnovers), Drew Walters (14 ground balls) and Andrew DeLonga (19 ground balls). Harley Beekman is also a key player, posting a .617 face-off percentage as he has won 113 of 183 faceoffs, and he has scooped up 85 ground balls.

The Saints face a formidable opponent in the Dolphins, are the only team in Division II yet to lose a game this season with a 16-0 record. LeMoyne dealt Limestone its first loss of the year on March 4, winning 13-4. Since then, the Dolphins went on to win their sixth straight Northeast-10 conference title and earn their fifth consecutive NCAA bid. Jason Longo leads the team in scoring with 32 goals, and is second on the team in points with 48. Mike McDonald has 39 points from 30 goals and 19 assists. LeMoyne's defense is No. 1 in NCAA Division II, only allowing 3.67 goals per game. The roster boasts the Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Year, Jared Corcoran, who leads the nation with a 3.73 goals against average and a .664 save percentage. Travis Tarr, conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, is a crucial part of the Dolphin defense. He is joined by Chris Doran and Matt Juriga on the back line.

The 2006 NCAA National Championship Final will be played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sunday, May 28 at 5:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on CSTV.

FORMER SAINTS COMPETE FOR NATIONAL LACROSSE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Former Saints lacrosse players Roger Vyse and Nick Carlson will compete in the 2006 National Lacrosse League Championship on May 13 at HSBC arena. Vyse’s team, the Buffalo Bandits, and Carlson’s team, the Colorado Mammoth, have each made it through the two rounds of the single-elimination NLL playoffs. Buffalo clinched the East Divisional title as Colorado won the West Division Championship. The NLL Championship match will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 6 p.m.

Vyse earned All-American honors while playing for Limestone in 2005 as he broke the 34-year-old NCAA Division II record of 70 goals by scoring 71 last year. Vyse has seven goals and tallied eight assists this season for Buffalo, helping the team to an 11-5 record. So far in the playoffs, he has scored two goals and dished out six assists.

Carlson, who earned All-American honors from 2000-02 while helping the Saints to two national championships, has played in 16 games for Colorado, recording 14 goals and 15 assists. The Mammoths have a 10-6 overall record this year. Carlson has two goal and three assists in his team’s two playoff appearances thus far. Earlier this year, Carlson was honored with a Humanitarian Award at the Denver Sports Fans Choice Awards. He earned the award after devoting much of his spare time to the children in the Denver community. He teaches the sport of lacrosse at local schools and leads assemblies that teach the history and fundamentals of the sport, and the differences between the indoor and outdoor game.

Saints Tap Phenicie as Interim Lacrosse Coach
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Limestone College Athletics Director Larry Epperly announced today that head men’s lacrosse coach Chris Hasbrouck has been terminated and that Chris Phenicie will serve as interim coach. “After careful evaluation of all aspects of the men’s lacrosse program, Limestone College has decided that a change of direction is important for its future. I have informed Coach Hasbrouck of that decision and have asked Chris Phenicie to provide leadership as interim coach, effective immediately.”

Phenicie is no stranger to the men’s lacrosse program at Limestone. From 1991 to 2003, he served as assistant coach. For the past several years, he has served as Vice President for Enrollment Services and in that position he has been responsible for the enrollment and retention programs that reach all students. In the interim, assistant coaches Chris Barrett and Brad Nasato will continue their roles.

It is anticipated that a national search will get underway this week for Hasbrouck’s replacement. Epperly said that Limestone’s long history of success in both the Deep South Conference and in NCAA national competition should be “positive factors in attracting top talent to the coaching position.”

LIMESTONE GETS FOURTH SEED IN DEEP SOUTH TOURNAMENT; SAINTS HOST MARS HILL ON TUESDAY
ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Limestone men’s lacrosse team was placed as the No. 4 seed for the Deep South Conference tournament, as announced by the league. Consequently, the No. 10-ranked Saints will host Mars Hill on Tuesday, April 18 at Saints Field in Gaffney, S.C. at 4 p.m.

The regular season ended in a five-way tie for first place in the Deep South Conference as each team had a 7-2 conference record. Since normal tiebreaker procedures could not break the logjam, a blind draw was held to determine the top seed for the tournament. St. Andrews (7-6 overall) won the draw for the top slot for the post-season competition.

Because the Saints and the Lions were both 1-2 against the other four tied teams, Limestone earned the fourth seed with its 10-6 win over Mars Hill February 25.

Wingate earned the #2 seed, Queens will play at #3, Belmont Abbey is at #6, Catawba is #7, and Pfeiffer will play at #8.

The winner of Tuesday’s game will play in the semifinals of the tournament on Friday at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. Game are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

SAINTS LEAVE MARK ON LACROSSE DRAFT
GAFFNEY, SC... The National Lacrosse League held its annual first-year player draft on Sunday. A pair of Limestone players were taken in the second round. Roger Vyse (Six Nations Reserve, Ontario, Canada) and Nolan Heavenor (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada), who led Limestone's record-setting offense in 2005, were taken with the 13th and 17th picks respectively.

Last season Vyse and Heavenor led Limestone to a 15-2 record, a record setting 6th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game, and Division II records with 399 goals and 521 points. Both players were named 1st-team All-American for their performance on the field. Vise had one of the greatest individual seasons in the history of Division II Lacrosse. He broke Doug Fry's (UMBC) 34-year-old record of 70 goals in a single season, finishing the year with 71 goals and 100 points. Vyse scored in every game of his two-year Limestone career except the first and finished with a streak of 25 consecutive multi-goal games. He was named Deep South Conference Player of the Year and Tournament MVP.

The Buffalo Bandits felt strongly enough about Vyse that they traded their first round pick for the 2006 draft to Calgary in order to secure him with 13th pick this year. Bandits General Manager Kurt Silcott belived that with Vyse and Jeff Shatler (10th pick), "the team has acquired the two best offensive players available in this draft." Shatler went on to say, "We felt that if Vyse was available during the 2006 NLL Entry Draft, he would be a top-five caliber player, so we therefore made the trade with Calgary to secure the 13th overall selection."

The Minnesota Swarm were equally compelled by Heavenor. The team took the 5-9, 180 lb. midfielder with their first pick in the draft (17th overall).

In his senior campaign, his first season taking face-offs for the Saints, Heavenor turned in an outstanding face-off percentage of .728. He also picked up 180 ground balls and scored 71 points on 42 goals and 29 assists, ranking in the nation's top-twenty for points, goals, and assists per game.

Limestone Head Coach Chris Hasbrouck was very proud of his players. "It says a lot about the caliber of player that we have here at Limestone. I think that Roger and Nolan will both have great professional careers and will represent both Limestone and NCAA Division II Lacrosse very well."
