| 1998 Season Outlook |
In their first season, the Saints passed many milestones in lacrosse by being the first varsity team to exist in the state of South Carolina and the first team from South Carolina to win a women's lacrosse game in the NCAA. This season they look to accomplish many more "firsts." Most importantly, they look to having a winning record in only their second year of competition. "We were one win away from being above .500 last season as a first year program. This season we are geared to not only have a winning record but to be ranked at some point this season," said Coach Scerbo. To accomplish these lofty goals, Coach Scerbo will look to a solid core of returning players led by returning All-American Tricia Davidson. Also returning for the Saints is a host of underclassmen led by sophomore Megan Crouse. In all, Limestone returns 9 starters from last season's team. Joining the Saints for the first time in 1997-98 will be some outstanding freshmen led by Dawn Smith, an All-State player out of Baldwinsville, NY. Vicky Perkins (Manlius, NY) and Kathy Martens (Glen Burnie, MD) will also be looked to for a dramatic impact in their first year. The fall season proved to be a success as the Saints drove down to Clemson, SC for a four way scrimmage with Clemson University, Auburn University, and Atlanta Club. The Saints started the day against what proved to be their toughest competition in an experienced Atlanta Club. Although Limestone out shot the post-collegiate club they dropped the game 6-5. After regrouping the Saints were able to bounce back as they faced Auburn University from Alabama. Megan Crouse paced the Saints as she scored early and often as Limestone cruised to a 8-0 victory. In the final game of the day Limestone was led by freshman Dawn Smith as they blew out Clemson University 10-0. "It was a good experience as we learned to play with the new restraining line. Although the team was confused at first we quickly settled into a rhythm and allowed our talent to shine," said Scerbo. |
