WOMEN’S LACROSSE HEADS TO NCAA TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND

GAFFNEY, S.C.: – The No. 6-ranked Limestone College women’s lacrosse team travels to Lisle, Ill., to compete in the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Championship hosted by Benedictine University this weekend. Limestone will compete in the semifinal game on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT against No. 3 West Chester. The championship match is slated for 12 p.m. CT on Sunday and will be broadcast live on CSTV.

Only four teams in the nation are selected to compete in the Division II women’s lacrosse tournament. Two teams are chosen from both the North and South Region. Limestone and West Chester were selected from the South, and No. 2 C.W. Post and No. 1 Adelphi will play in the North region semifinal game at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Limestone is the only team in the 2006 tournament field who has not won the national championship. Adelphi won the title in 2004, West Chester won in 2002, and C.W. Post was the national champion in 2001. This year marks the sixth time that the tournament has been held.

The Lady Saints are a strong contender for the national title this year. Limestone finished the season with an impressive 16-3 overall record with a win percentage of .842, the second best in school history behind the 2001 season when the squad was 10-1 (.909). This was also the seventh straight winning season for Limestone the team also won the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. Along the way, Limestone played some of the toughest teams in the country and picked up big wins over No. 7 Pfeiffer and No. 6 Queens. This is the second tournament appearance for Limestone, as the Lady Saints were awarded their first NCAA berth in 2004.

Limestone’s semifinal opponent, West Chester, is making its fifth appearance at the tournament. The team has never lost in the semifinals, posting a 4-0 record, but is only 1-3 in the title game. Last season, the Golden Rams lost to Stonehill in the NCAA final and were beaten by Adelphi in 2004. West Chester eliminated the Lady Saints from the 2004 tournament in the two teams’ last meeting, as the Rams beat Limestone 23-12. West Chester is 3-0 all-time against Limestone. The Rams recently won their third straight PSAC Championship, its fifth in the last six seasons.

Tickets for the 2006 NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse tournament may be purchased through Benedictine University by calling (630) 829-6087. All tournament tickets will be sold until the competition begins. Single session tickets cost $5.00 for students and $8.00 for adults, while all-session tickets will be $9.00 for students and $15.00 for adults.

LADY SAINTS RECEIVE NCAA TOURNAMENT BID

GAFFNEY, S.C.: – The No. 6 Limestone College women’s lacrosse team received an NCAA Tournament bid and will compete for the 2006 Division II national title on May 13-14. The Lady Saints play West Chester in the tournament semifinals in Lisle, Ill., hosted by Benedictine University.

Limestone, ranked sixth in the latest IWLCA poll on May 1, finished the season with a 16-3 overall record as the team won the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference regular season and tournament title. West Chester is rated at No. 3 with a 15-2 record.

The other semifinal match-up features No. 1 Adelphi (14-0) and No. 2 C.W. Post (15-1).

Only four teams qualify for the women’s lacrosse Division II tournament. Two teams are selected from the North and South region.

WISE NAMED PLAYER AND ROOKIE OF THE WEEK BY WOMENSLACROSSE.COM

GAFFNEY, S.C.: – Limestone freshman Lauryn Wise (Pasadena, Md.) was named Division II Rookie and Player of the Week by womenslacrosse.com on April 24. Wise, a midfielder, helped the Lady Saints win the CVAC Tournament Championship and was named tournament MVP.

She had a goal in the semifinals match against Belmont Abbey in the Lady Saints’ 20-9 victory, and then scored three goals against Pfeiffer in the Championship match. Wise recorded four draw controls and scooped up four ground balls during the tournament.

LIMESTONE’S TUCKER NAMED CVAC WOMEN’S LACROSSE COACH OF THE YEAR; LICKERT EARNS FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR HONORS WHILE SIX LADY SAINTS NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE

GAFFNEY, S.C.: – Limestone College women’s lacrosse head coach Scott Tucker was named conference Coach of the Year at the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference awards banquet on Saturday evening. Six of the Lady Saints earned All-Conference honors, while Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.) was named Freshman of the Year.

First-Team All-Conference honorees included Lickert, Marissa Pesce (West Babylon, N.Y.), Kristen Black (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), and Chrissy Grogg (Taberg, N.Y.) Brooke Nowell (Linthicum, Md.) and Jackie Weaver (Carthage, N.Y.) received Honorable Mention honors.

Tucker was also named CVAC Coach of the Year in 2004, in the same season he guided Limestone’s program to its first NCAA tournament berth and to the NCAA Final Four.

This is the third year in a row that a Lady Saint has been named Freshman of the Year. Summer Ferraro won the award in 2004 and Andrea Poor won it in 2005. Lickert had a solid start to her college career, as she led Limestone with 57 points and 31 assists. She was second on the squad with 26 goals and was ranked second in the CVAC with 1.88 assists/game and was 4th with 3.50 points/game. Lickert began the season with a six point performance (5G, 1A) against St. Andrews on February 25. She had another five-goal performance against St. Andrews on April 1, and also had five assists in that contest for 10 points.

Pesce led Limestone in scoring with 37 goals. She also recorded six assists for a total of 43 points while scooping up 29 groundballs, winning 20 draw controls and causing 21 turnovers. She had season-high seven point performance (5G, 2A) against Lees-McRae (3/11). She had five-goal games on two other occasions: versus Presbyterian (2/18) and against at Lees-McRae (4/4).

Black, a pre-season All-American, had a great senior season as one of the Lady Saints top defenders. She led Limestone with 36 draw controls and 46 ground balls, while scoring 22 goals and dishing out 11 assists for 33 points. She had three five-point performances this season against Lees-McRae (3/11 and 4/4) and Pfeiffer (4/15). Black also caused 16 turnovers this spring.

As a freshman, Grogg started in every game for the Lady Saints. She led Limestone with 33 caused turnovers for the season and was third on the team with 44 ground balls. She picked up 10 ground balls against Millersville (3/15), and had a season-high five caused turnovers against Lees-McRae on April 4. She also scored two goals, one against Presbyterian (2/18) and another against Regis (3/8).

Nowell, also a pre-season All-American, was a key player in Limestone's attack this season. She scored 23 goals and tallied 10 in 16 appearances. Nowell had a season-high six points against Lees-McRae on March 11.

Weaver played in all 16 games for the Lady Saints this spring, accumulating a 7.05 GAA and making 75 saves. She helped Limestone to two shutouts against Regis University (3/8) and Lees-McRae (4/4). She had a season-high 16 saves against No. 1 Stonehill (3/6). She also had a great performance in the Lady Saints win over No. 8 Pfeiffer as she had 12 saves.

LIMESTONE HOSTS CVAC WOMEN’S LACROSSE TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND

GAFFNEY, S.C.: – Limestone College will host the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23 at Saints Field. The contest features three of the nation’s top 10 teams in Division II: No. 7 Limestone, No. 6 Queens and No. 8 Pfeiffer.

On Saturday, #2-seeded Queens (7-2 CVAC) will take on #3 Pfeiffer (6-3 CVAC) at noon. Tournament host and CVAC regular season champion #1 Limestone (9-1 CVAC) will take on the #4 seed at 2:30 p.m.. The final slot in the tournament will be Belmont Abbey or St. Andrews. That seed will be decided after the Crusaders and Knights play matches on Tuesday.

KRISTEN BLACK NAMED DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK BY WOMENSLACROSSE.COM

GAFFNEY, S.C.: – Limestone College senior Kristen Black was named Division II Player of the Week by womenslacrosse.com on April 3 for her performance against No. 6 Queens on March 28.

Black, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, had two draw controls, four ground balls and the game-winning goal for the No. 5 Lady Saints as they rallied for a 6-5 win over the Royals last Tuesday.

She capped off the week by scoring two goals with two more draw controls in Limestone’s 20-4 win over conference-rival St. Andrews on Saturday.

Limestone holds the top slot in CVAC standings with a perfect 7-0 record (11-2 overall).

LIMESTONE’S HOWARD NAMED CVAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK

BLUFFTON, S.C.: – Limestone College freshman Melissa Howard (Ferndale, Md.) was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women’s Lacrosse Player-of-the-Week by the league office on Monday.

Howard, who starts at attack, led the Lady Saints with 12 points last week, scoring seven goals and recording five assists. She scored three goals in Limestone’s 21-0 shutout against Regis last Wednesday, and continued her scoring streak against Lees-McRae, scoring four goals and dishing out three assists to lead her team to their third CVAC win of the season. Howard leads the Lady Saints with 15 assists and 33 points for the spring and has 18 goals.

The Lady Saints travel to Brooklandville, Md., on Sunday, March 19 to play No. 6 Lockhaven at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s High School.

NO. 5 LIMESTONE HOSTS NO. 1 STONEHILL MONDAY

The No. 5-ranked Limestone women’s lacrosse team hosts the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Stonehill College, on Monday, March 6 at 3:30 p.m. at Saints Field. The Lady Saints enter the match with a 4-0 record.

Monday’s game is the season opener for the defending NCAA National Champion Stonehill Skyhawks. Stonehill is ranked No. 1 in Inside Lacrosse’s latest poll after finishing last season with a perfect 24-0 record. Skyhawks midfielder Erin Acone, a three-time All-American, was named to the Tewaarton Tropy Watch List for the second consecutive season. She is the only Division II player on the list for the honor given to the nation’s top player.

The Lady Saints, rated No. 5 in the latest Inside Lacrosse and IWLCA polls, handed Mercyhurst an 18-5 loss on Thursday, March 38 for their fourth straight win. Limestone’s lineup boasts Pre-Season All-Americans Kristen Black (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/14 ground balls) and Brooke Nowell (Linthicum, Md./8 goals) The team has also seen significant contributions from other players, including Marissa Pesce (West Babylon, N.Y./7 goals), Kelly Lickert (Pen Yann, N.Y./19 points, 8 assists), and Melissa Howard (Ferndale, Md./8 goals, 7 assists)

SOUTH OF THE BORDER TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD AT DUKE

The Lady Saints Lacrosse team will travel to Duke University at Sunday, February 12 for the South of the Border Tournament. The tournament, originally slated to be held at UNC-Chapel Hill, will take place at Duke’s west campus turf fields.

Limestone will play Duke at 11 a.m., Longwood at 12 p.m., and OSU at 2 p.m.

Games will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will end at 3:30 p.m. Each contest will be two 25-minute halves with a five minute halftime. There will be a five minute break between games.

LIMESTONE WOMEN’S LACROSSE NO. 6 IN IWLCA PRE-SEASON POLL

The Limestone College Women’s Lacrosse team is ranked No. 6 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s February 7 pre-season poll.

Stonehill was picked No. 1, while C.W. Post is second, West Chester is third, Adelphi is No. 4 and Lock Haven is No. 5.

The Lady Saints were ranked No. 2 in Inside Lacrosse’s preseason poll on February 6. Defending national champion Stonehill is No. 1 in the ratings, released on February 6 and No. 5 national ranking in Lacrosse Magazine's 2006 preseason poll released on December 22.

Limestone will begin its season on Saturday, February 18 when it hosts Presbyterian at 12 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.

LIMESTONE WOMEN’S LACROSSE RANKED NO. 2 IN INSIDE LACROSSE’S PRESEASON DIVISION II POLL

WOMEN'S LACROSSE TO COMPETE AT SOUTH OF THE BORDER TOURNAMENT

The Limestone College Lady Saints lacrosse team will compete at the South of the Border Tournament in on the campus of UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday, February 12.

Limestone will play Duke at 11 a.m., Longwood at 12 p.m., and OSU at 2 p.m.

Games will be two 25-minute halves with a five minute halftime. There will be a five minute break between games.

All games are scheduled for UNC's Finley Fields (directions are available at www.tarheelblue.com).

TWO LADY SAINTS NAMED PRE-SEASON ALL-AMERICANS

Two Limestone College women’s lacrosse players were named pre-season All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse magazine. Senior Kristen Black (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) earned First Team honors while senior Brooke Nowell (Linthicum, Md.) was named to the Second Team.

Both players earned All-Region and All-Conference recognition last season while helping Limestone to a No. 10 national ranking and a second regular season conference title.

Black had an outstanding junior season, starting in all 16 of Limestone’s matches. She scored 12 goals and tallied two assists. She set career highs with 25 caused turnovers and 42 ground balls and set a school single season record with 47 draw controls.

Nowell also started in every game for the Lady Saints in 2005, recording 26 points with 28 goals and eight assists while scooping up 46 ground balls.

The All-American list is part of Inside Lacrosse’s women’s preview issue which is due out on newsstands the first week in February.

The Lady Saints will begin their season on Saturday, February 18 when they host Presbyterian at 12 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.

LADYS SAINTS LACROSSE PICKED NO. 2 IN CVAC PRESEASON POLL

THOMASVILLE, NC: The Limestone women’s lacrosse team was picked to finish second in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll, as announced by the league office on Monday. Defending CVAC-tournament champion, Pfeiffer University, was selected to finish first in this season’s poll.

Limestone’s team is looking to build on a successful 2005 season in 2006. The Lady Saints finished last season with a 10-6 record, missing the national semifinals, but finished the year ranked No. 10 in the nation. A 6-2 CVAC record delivered the team’s second regular season conference title.

Limestone head coach Scott Tucker has a talented team that aims to make the 2006 NCAA tournament. The Lady Saints return three players who earn All-Region honors last season: midfielders Brooke Nowell (Linthicum, Md./28 goals, 36 points) and Marissa Pesce (West Babylon, N.Y./32 goals, 42 points) and defender Kristen Black (Calgary, Alberta, Canada). Black set career highs with 25 caused turnovers and 42 ground balls and set a Limestone single season record with 47 draw controls. She was named Second-Team All-American. All three players earned All-Conference recognition. The team also has several new recruits who will be expected to make an impact in 2006.

LADY SAINTS RANKED NO. 5 IN PRESEASON POLL

BALTIMORE, MD: The Limestone women's lacrosse team earned a No. 5 national ranking in Lacrosse Magazine's 2006 preseason poll.

The rankings are compiled by Lacrosse Magazine staff with consultations from coaches and other members of the press. The college preseason ratings appear in the January/February issue of the publication and can be viewed online at www.laxmagazine.com.

Limestone will face some tough competition in 2006, competing against four of the Top 10 teams in the nation: No. 1 Stonehill (March 5), No. 6 Queens (March 28 and April 12), No. 8 Pfeiffer (March 25 and April 15, and No. 9 Gannon (April 29).

The team will begin its season on Saturday, February 18 when it hosts Presbyterian at 12 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE INKS TWO NEW PLAYERS

GAFFNEY, SC: The Limestone women's lacrosse team announced that two players have signed National Letters of Intent to compete with the Lady Saints. Kelly Oterson (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip H.S.) and Renee Albro (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley High School) will bring their skill and talent to Limestone in Fall 2006.

Kelly Oterson started playing for East Islip High School's varsity lacrosse team as a freshman. As a sophomore she was named All-League, and received All-County honors as a junior.

"Kelly is a strong one-on-one player," pointed out Limestone head coach Scott Tucker. "She has the ability and work ethic to come in and make an immediate impact as a freshman."

Renee Albro is a three-year letterwinner for Loudoun Valley High School. She helped her team to a 42-6 record over her career, the 2003 Dulles District Championship title, and a runner-up finish in the district in 2005. Albro earned First Team All-District honors in 2003-04 and was a First-Team All-Region selection in 2004. In 2003, she was named Second-Team All-Region and a Washington Post all-extra honorable mention. She was also honored by the Washington Post in 2004-05. She plans to major in criminal justice at Limestone.

"Renee will add speed and athleticism to our midfield," said Tucker. "Her ability to transition the ball and create scoring opportunities will make her a valuable asset to our midfield."

The Lady Saints lacrosse team will begin its season on Saturday, February 18 when it hosts Presbyterian at Saints Field at 12 p.m.

RAINS POSTPONE EVENTS

GAFFNEY, SC: Due to heavy rain, several events for Limestone College's Homecoming weekend have been cancelled or postponed.

The women's and men's soccer games against Lees-McRae College at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. have been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date.

All outdoor alumni games have also been cancelled. This includes the men's tennis match, baseball and softball games, and women's lacrosse game. The men's lacrosse scrimmage is cancelled as well, as all the fields are under water.

The alumni men's basketball game will be held at 4:00 p.m. in Timken Gym.

The picnic lunch at 11:30 a.m. will be held in Stephenson Dining Hall.

The recognition BBQ honoring the CVAC Championship baseball team will also take place in Stephenson Dining Hall, at 5:30 p.m.

FALL FEST TOURNAMENT RESULTS

GAFFNEY, SC: The Limestone women's lacrosse team hosted the 3rd annual Fall Fest tournament, sponsored by Sagebrush Steakhouse, this past Saturday, September 24th at Limestone College in Gaffney, SC.

Limestone played 4 games throughout the day. Their biggest test was against Davidson College, a Division I program from Davidson, NC. The Lady Saints played two competitive scrimmages against the Wildcats. The Saints are pleased they could compete with a good Division I team. Limestone also played strong games against Belmont Abbey College and Queens University of Charlotte.

Head Coach Scott Tucker was excited by the performance of his young squad. "Our team has already shown great depth for this year. It was great to start off the year with the confidence and ability to compete with some great teams, including a Division I team."

The Lady Saints would like to thank Sagebrush Steakhouse for their support in hosting this event. Practices will continue during the fall off-season for the Lady Saints, in preparation for their first contest against Presbyterian College on February 18, 2006.

LIMESTONE WILL HOST 3RD ANNUAL FALL FEST

GAFFNEY, SC: The Limestone women’s lacrosse team will host the 3rd annual Fall Fest tournament this Saturday at Limestone College in Gaffney, SC.

Limestone has invited Belmont Abbey College, Methodist College, Lees-McRae College, Presbyterian College, Queens University of Charlotte, and Davidson College to participate in the one day tournament. T-shirts and refreshments will be available for purchase at the fields. The first games begin at 11:00 a.m. with the final game at 3:40 p.m.

Limestone will play at 11:00 a.m. vs. Lees-McRae, 12:20 p.m. vs. Methodist, 1:40 p.m. vs. Belmont Abbey, and 3:40 p.m. vs. Davidson. T-shirts and refreshments will be available for purchase at the fields.

LIMESTONE TO HOST CVAC CHAMPIONSHIP

GAFFNEY, SC: Limestone has won the bid to host the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference women's lacrosse championships. The conference championship will take place April 22-23. Beginning on Saturday, the semi-final games will start at 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. On Sunday, the final is set for 2:00 p.m.

This is the third consecutive year Limestone has hosted the CVAC championships. Women's lacrosse is in its third year as a CVAC sport, and the Lady Saints have appeared in both of the two previous championship finals. Limestone came up short in both those games, losing to Pfeiffer by one goal both years.

The Lady Saints begin practice this week in preparations for their season starting in February.
